Adding a personal touch to any email helps. It helps connect with your readers and, yes, helps increase response rates.
When I make a blanket statement like that, people tend to come back to me with a 'That depends...' kind of response. Well, maybe it does. But I have yet to find an audience that wouldn't respond well to a more personal tone in the emails they receive.

A little while back I spoke at the Clickz b2c e-mail conference. Andy Bourland had asked me to speak about copywriting online. As I prepared the talk - and then gave it - I was delighted to find that a lot of people in the audience really wanted to hear about how to write online.
I guess writing is a subject that doesn't crop up too often at conferences.
Why not? Because writing is not one of the sexy things that happens online. Programming is sexy. Online design is sexy. The technology behind e-mail and e-commerce is sexy.
