I work as a school counselor in a pre-K through first grade elementary school in western Massachusetts. I am also an adoptive mother. I have had many occasions to talk to the children in my school about adoption and to observe what questions, concerns and thoughts come up for these children concerning the subject of adoption. Very young children, toddlers and preschoolers, don't fully comprehend the concept of adoption.

The crisis of the teen years for older adopted children may call into question adoptive parents' faith in the possibility of healing. Are "the wounds...too deep, the patterns too set, the help too late"? For me at least, such questions are spiritual. They undermine my confidence in the "rightness" of the universe or God.

Just a few years ago, Carolyn and Colin Miller of Etobicoke, Ontario became parents at Toronto's international airport. Their two children arrived from Russia carrying nothing in their hands - no luggage, toys or extra clothes. Svetlana was four and her (new) brother Andrew was seven. They spoke not a word of English and were greeted by two eager and anxious adults ready to become their mother and father.
